Group B Streptococci

Our laboratory has been studying the interaction of group B streptococci (GBS) with the host immune system for many years. Initial studies focused on the development of monoclonal antibodies to GBS that provide passive protection to infection. We are currently studying two aspects of the GBS host-pathogen interaction. The first set of studies examines opacity phase variation and its effects on the interaction between host and GBS. The second set of studies utilizes peptide mimetics of GBS carbohydrate antigens as potential antigens for a GBS vaccine. These studies examine the stuctural basis fo this unusual form of biological mimicry.
