HIV envelope gp120 and gp41

Furin is a member of a family of proprotein convertases (PPCs) responsible for the maturation of various cellular proteins. HIV also uses this enzyme and related PPCs to cleave its envelope precursor protein, gp160, into the mature forms gp120 (surface) and gp41 (transmembrane) if this cleavage does not occur HIV is not infectious. We are studying the effects of furin inhibitors on HIV infection.
